Today, there were 3 groups that came through the nature center! the first was a group from PEP, a small school in cleveland that has been coming to the nature center intermittently throughout this past school year. they previously had worked to grow plants, and then today the kids helped to plant what they had grown in the nature center's marsh. The next group from Hathaway Brown came right as the students from PEP were leaving, leaving our senior project crew to scramble to get tools and gloves ready for them. We managed to plant some plants on the hillside that the previous group from HB had worked on, making the permaculture garden at the nature center even greener! The third group came to the nautre center right as our day was ending, but they were a group from Roxboro middle school who were coming to do some weeding in the marsh. it was certainly an eventful day.

Working with other Volunteers
The past two days at the Nature center has been full of volunteer groups from different schools in the area who were all ready to work! First thing monday morning, our senior project group led a group of third graders from University School to a part of the nature center that was covered in english vine, an invasive species that can suffocate the surrounding trees if it is not managed. The third graders were separated into 4 groups of 3, with each of the senior project students leading one of the teams to try and pick the most vine off of the ground! Keeping with the friendly spirit of teamwork, there was no declared winner (even though my group clearly had the heaviest bag).

Grant, thats really cool how you get to not only meet with adults and learn new things about the garden, but you also get to be a leader for a group of young kids. You get to show them how to work together and get a lot done while making it fun with friends. This seems like a really great project that you get to reach out into the younger and older and natural community to experience all different types of people.
ReplyDeleteGrant I think it's awesome how involved you are with the kids coming through the nature center and I hope that all is going well with Chris and the other students on project there. I can definitely see your Peer Leader skills coming into play here as you handle the kids that come through from the various schools. Project seems like it is going really well as you teach and learn about all that is going on the nature center. Continue to hold down the home front and having a great time.
